Carnegie Hall SongStudio | Part One
With the MET OPERA dark in February I needed something to do. Jazz is always there and so marvelous in New York. Yet…
I searched for a quick second on the Carnegie Hall website and… of all things – there she was. My new love… Golda! Well… cards on the table Golda Schultz has no idea that she made such an impression as Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore just weeks ago. But we were all simply taken away by her performance. Golda Schultz! Wow – and in a masterclass. OK – ‘nuf said… I am in!
And so began a week of joy. Four masterclasses led by four musicians at the top of their games. Golda Schultz. Hartmut Höll. Renee Fleming. Jamie Barton. An intimate setting (the Weill Performance Hall) working with beyond-gifted young singers who won a seat in this program. Still cannot believe it… and I was there to witness it all.
This is the first of two shows on art song. German Lieder. Storytelling and poetry. A world familiar (I guess) to me… yet exotic and foreign at the same time. The opportunity was there – I grabbed it. I am extremely proud of what you are about to hear. Got to be my best work yet on Lester the Nightfly. More to come next week – PJ Ewing
